a small practice of writing

With this blog I explored different type of writing with the same theme: an abstract of the project positioning through iterating.

variation1

This project focused on the relationship between the emotion and the text. The question I’m exploring is “should type be read – or felt?”. In the first week I took a diary entry from the book “Flower for Algernon”, and by changing the text parameters – leading, tracking, font size and rotation – I’m exploring how the form of the text will change the way we feel it. The values constrained to multiples of five, to explore it systemically.

However, I started to questioning myself, if the choices are no longer governed by an external rule, they have to be governed by something else. The question became: by what, or by who?

In week 2, I added more parameters and ignored the rule I created in week 1, I tried to govern the text. I found out that when I’m reading it, my understanding of the text will change based on my own experience and memories: when I am reading the struggle of the protagonist, Charlie, I can’t stop thinking about my grandmother’s gradual illness. By distorting the text, I tried to capture my every single feeling when I am reading it.

the research shows when we capture some information, we will distort them based on our previous experience, we read ourselves through the book. As result, when other people are reading our experience through the variated text which created unique form, he will also have different understanding about the content. So, the form has an important function in reading, it is the content, or better, the content is the form.

variation 2

This project is a publication which explore how our emotion is changing during the reading, and it also shows that the form of the text can change the meaning of the text.

Initially I made a 100 pages book, each page has the same content, a diary entry from the book “flowers for Algernon”, but each page has small variation of the form, by changing the values of the text parameters in multiples of five, I tried to understand how those small variation would change our understanding about the text.

Then I made another book, in which I didn’t change the form by the multiple of five, I just tried to show my memories which comes up when I am reading it, it’s like a Virginia Woolf’s flow of conscious, but represented visually.

This project is an experimentation which explore how our previous experience will affect our way of getting new information’s, and how the form of the content will change the understanding of the content.

variation 3

This is a first Unit 2 project in MA GCD Course, the brief asks students to find out their positioning in a graphic design context.

With previous unit1 project, I found out that my interest is about people’s emotion and experience, so I wanted to dig in more this topic.

My research initial question was “should text be read – or felt”, to answer this, I did some experiment with typography: By manipulating the parameters of texts, – leading, tracking, font sizes, and rotation – I explored how those small variations would change the meaning of the content. However, I found out that everyone has different understanding about the content which made the result of the experiment extremely personal. So, I changed my research question and decided to explore the relationship between people’s inner experience and the action of reading.
